TED Tuesday - Blaise Aguera y Arcas

Welcome to Ted Tuesday. Hopefully, for all you students, this will keep you preoccupied from the studying that you, oh so need to get done and for you all worker bees, may this give you a nice little break from the corporate queen. Grab a green tea, sit back and let your mind get a blast of intellectual inspiration and awe. Its pretty short then the usual videos I put up. Just 7 minutes, 45 seconds.

Blaise Aguera y Arcas demos augmented-reality maps - 7:45

Pretty nifty display on where we are headed when it comes to digital cartography. Its crazy to think about our current state when it comes to maps. I remember briefly living in a time without GPSs. I would use mapquest to print out directions to where I wanted to go. Go back a year from then and people were using road atlases and shudder....asking for directions. I remember back in my freshman college days, I would, for shits and giggles, drive around aimlessly for hours and then try to find my way back. Sometimes, I was able to find my way, and other times I caught myself begging the travel gods for assistance as I drove through dark, unpaved roads. Surrounded by trees and occasionally passing no trespassing signs written in a dark red color.

Its pretty cool to check back at some of the maps from the ancient times.

Post Edit:

While walking Xander through the park a thought crossed my mind about us being cartographers of our own lives. We start with a blank sheet, upon which, we can draw out the paths that we want to travel. For some, the map is marked with predetermined goals, for others there is nothing. The metaphor continues to grow as do we; our memories, experiences, choices, slowly start to fill the map out. An unexpected thing like a camera landing on your lap, suddenly pushes you towards a path that never once crossed your mind. We are cartographers of our souls. If you ever get stuck, pull out your map, that only you can see and pick where you want to go. Travel well, travel safe.

That is extremely neat. I remember a while back they actually did a virtual museum art exhibit using maps like those. It was really neat to look at, like traveling without even leaving your computer. I'd post the link, but I searched it and it's not even up anymore. :( I can't wait to see how they advance even more. I, too, remember navigating using an atlas or impossible to fold map. Ugh. *shutters* We spent hours traveling to a beach one night driving in circles. Definitely not fun. Oddly enough, it happened again last year when I went with a couple of friends, without GPS, non the less, to an acting convention on the coast. We ended up fifteen miles from our hotel at 1 in the morning.

Cool TED post Serg. I like the after thought of we are our creators of our own map of life. Maps and the world are ever changing as so ourselves should be too.

Have a good week!

Since blogspot won't let me edit my comment that I made BEFORE your blog edit, I'll do it here. You're exactly right! You're speaking of a "camera landing in your lap" made me think. I could have gone to a top-notch university on a music scholarship for voice. Things didn't work out and I ended up at a smaller school studying graphic design, and photography was a required course for a graphic design degree. If the events that led to me being in design classes hadn't have happened, I'd never have found my passion in photography. :)

Very cool! I especially liked being able to look up at the night sky. I've always had an interest in learning about the constellations and knowing where to find them in the sky in different seasons.

My Dad taught me to read maps at a very young age. Mostly because we traveled our vacations in the car alot. I actually find it fascinating to travel long distance and look at a map to see where we are on this planet called Earth.
Actually yesterday I was looking at Google earth and it is amazing how far we've come as far as technology. Kinda creepy in a way too that I can see my house and street from satellite on the internet. Anyone can find it..

Don't know if I like that o_O

As far as our lives being charted or mapped, I think some of us are meant to do certain things and some of us have to find our way on our own, like you said. However I am a believer of fate. Everything happens for a reason, whether we like it or not.

Have a good night Serg.

Hey Serge.. I heard that Peter Parker is getting fired from his journalistic photography job in his Marvel comic. Any thoughts on applying for his job?

Apply for his job...screw that. Time for Parker and I to team up and be the best pair of photojournalists in town.

I'm sorry. I have no cool language lessons for you. Unless you want to learn "Southerner." Careful; that green tea will make you healthy. Come down here and I'll fry something for you. ;)

Can't wait for Hotel Conneaut field trip! My friend bought a new digital camera, and I'm borrowing a family member's...dare I say?...old school, actually-still-uses-film camera. Conneaut Lake looks like a good place to explore and play with the scenery.
Really looking forward to it...but only if you do finger puppets while we're there.

I do not write a lot of responses, but i did a few searching and wound up
here "TED Tuesday - Blaise Aguera y Arcas".
And I actually do have a few questions for you if you tend not to mind.
Is it simply me or does it give the impression like
a few of these responses appear as if they are left by brain dead visitors?
:-P And, if you are writing on other online social sites, I would like to follow anything new you have
to post. Would you make a list of the complete urls of your shared sites like your linkedin profile,
